I have been meeting with 7th grade students and discussing the idea of creating an honor code here at McDowell as an extension of our BRAVE program. We looked at codes from other schools, such as “students will not participate in lying, cheating, or stealing, and will not tolerate those actions in others.” Some of the students have created analogies to try to think about what an honor code could do for McDowell. A couple of favorites include “an honor code would be to McDowell what trees are to monkeys.” At first I wasn’t sure about that one, but the students were able to explain that the monkeys can get where they are going faster and safer using trees. That was great! Another group came up with the comparison of wedding vows to a marriage. Those are the moments when an educator loves what she is doing:) What would you include in an honor code?
Mix It Up At Lunch Day Successful October 24, 2011
On Tuesday, Ocotber 18, McDowell students participated in the National Mix It Up at Lunch Day. They mixed it up with music, a slideshow, activities, and even the Hokey-Pokey. The goal was to have students talk with students that they may not normally talk with and learn a little bit more about each other.
McDowell students, let me know your ideas for mixing it up at lunch again. It was a lot of fun and your were all great about it. Thanks!
8th grade Social Studies Hosts a Speaker October 24, 2011
Jessica Trickett, a chemical dependency counselor with Amethyst Inc., recently spoke to 8th grade students at McDowell about her personal and professional experience with prescription drug abuse. In talking with the students she dispelled myths about the problem, educated students about the dangers, and shared her personal story. Trickett is in recovery from addiction to prescription pain killers.
Students reacted positively to her message with some sharing of their own. They especially responded to her personal story. One student commented that it was good to have her because some kids start using drugs during middle school. Others hoped that her presentation would keep students from trying drugs.
The presentation was made possible from a donation to the Logan Elm Education Foundation by the Ohio Pharmacists’ Association. The association was honoring Circleville business owner and pharmacist, Larry Shieber for receiving the Cardinal Health Generation RX Champions’ Award. He had worked previously with McDowell students on a project related to prescription drug abuse and wanted to continue to keep students informed about the issue.

Community Activities September 14, 2011
Are you involved in any activities in the community outside of school? I would love to know what they are. I want to highlight our students’ activities here and on a bulletin board at school. If you don’t want to comment here, write a note and drop it by the office. Don’t worry, I wouldn’t put something on the bulletin board without checking with you first:)
I am sure that we have some volunteers, boy scouts, dancers, dirt bike racers, barrel racers, and many others. I want to hear from all of you!
Jupiter Grades Passwords September 14, 2011
Parents and students, let me know if you need your temporary password or a password reset for Jupiter Grades. Parents, this is a wonderful tool. Not only can you see your child’s grades and assignments, but you can set up your account to get automatic emails if he/she is missing an assignment or weekly emails with current grades. There is so much information available. Let me know if you have questions. By the way, this is Snapgrades that we used last year. It just has a new name.
